RE:SOUL SESSIONS

LOVESCENE + Laura Kindelan

past, present & future soul music

Lovescene are a great contemporary soul band from Manchester, currently the hot UK city for soul music. Headed up by Pops Roberts, a producer/vocalist who has worked for various labels including Apollo R&S and Fulfill as well as being Children Of Zeus live set DJ, the project began from experimenting with chopping up soundtrack loops and drum machinery to create original contemporary soul tracks. Fast-forward to a band forming and the sound mutating further into something reminiscent of music from the late 1980s and 1990s golden era of neo-soul and r'n'b with an emphasis on love, its changing scenes from dark to light, but with that dance-floor energy we so truly need these days.

The band are comprised of some deeply respected musicians in the north-west: Alex Hill (Lieko Quintet,Foo Birds) on keys, synths and backing vocals - Ruben Sheridan (Mr Mustard, Kara) on drums - Ben Price (Vulpine, Blind Mic) on bass guitar/backing vocals - Adisa Allen (British Drum Co, Vulpine) on percussion, sampling and backing vocals. All powerhouses within the jazz, hip-hop, soul and sessions scenes of Manchester.

In their short career, Lovescene have already performed live at various prestigious festivals and venues. These include Manchester International Festival, We Out Here Festival 2019, top Manchester venues Band On The Wall and Yes, and most recently last summer's, We Out Here Virtual Festival 2020. Their live set was followed by MCR DJ legend and big fan Mr Scruff starting his set with their latest single. Now gigs are slowly returning, their diary is filling up with bookings including this debut show in Leeds.

Their second release "Overnight' b/w "Finally" came out last summer, a 2-track EP of timeless soul music mixed by Manchester's sound engineer legend Yvonne “D’Alchemiss” Ellis (credits include Simply Red, Swing Out Sister, Corinne Bailey Rae, Arun Ghosh, Stuart McCallum, Secret Night Gang). Two quality numbers that marry their love for classic soul music with today's contemporary sounds, both got plenty of support and airplay from the right DJs UK and worldwide. In November 2020, they released a single which sums up the year for millions of us in this time of COVID...."Isolate With You".....a sweet 80s soul sounding gem with lyrics that are pure 2020. Lovescene were just putting down markers and announcing themselves in 2020. For 2021, with a new album on the horizon, they're definitely ones to watch out for as breakout artists, be it soul or the wider music scene.

Since 2015, RE:SOUL Sessions have always been about helping new young soul/jazz/hip-hop artists, often from Leeds College Of Music, showcase their music to a wider audience. Tonight we feature singer/guitarist Laura Kindelan who is building a reputation for herself as a talented singer and composer with her refreshingly different take on contemporary soul. Joining forces in 2018 at Leeds Conservatoire, band members Luca Ferrara (drums), Sam Curwen (bass) and Jacob Hargreaves Priestley (keys) help bring her compositions to life with a unique blend of glitch, soul and groove. Drawing Influence from artists such as Hiatus Kaiyote, Lianne La Havas and Radiohead, their sound is characterised by soulful vocals and jazz harmony underpinned with driving bass lines and hip hop beats. In  2021, expect big things for Laura Kindelan and her band with exciting releases on the horizon and a return to live gigs. A rising star of leftfield soul.

Before and between sets, DJ Lubi  will be playing the deep soulful sounds past, present and future that represent RE:SOUL.
