Dj Lubi presents...

JAZZLAND SESSIONS : A Blue Note Records Tribute Pt 3

Nico Widdowson Quintet + Grifton Forbes-Amos Quintet

With the slow reopening of society, the economy and the music industry from mid may, Brudenell Social Club welcomes back longtime Leeds DJ/promoter Lubi Jovanovic with more of his socially distanced Jazzland Sessions concerts. After the first tribute to legendary US modern jazz label Blue Note Records sold out in the autumn, here comes another one. This evening, we celebrate the Blue Note releases of pianist Herbie Hancock and trumpeter Freddie Hubbard.

No matter how contemporary a jazz style today's young musicians play, they always reference back for inspiration to the greatest modern jazz label of all time, Blue Note Records. This is the case for tonight's headline band the Nico Widdowson Quintet. Band leader/pianist Nico Widdowson is one of the busiest musicians from the new jazz generation in Leeds of the last five years, leading his own bands and also playing in The Mabgate Organ Trio,  Fergus Quill Trio, MDVLNS, George Hall's UGETSU and Fergus's Imaginary Big Band. He has been hugely inspired by the music of Herbie Hancock and so when  asked if he'd like to do this Blue Note/Herbie tribute session, he jumped at it and put together a monster band of heavy musicians from the current Leeds jazz scene. He's focussing on music from Herbie's early Blue Note albums and music from "Takin' Off", "My Point Of View", "Empyrean Iles" and "Maiden Voyage". If you love Herbie's acoustic jazz on Blue Note, you'll love this session.

Nico Widdowson Quintet are : Nico Widdowson - acoustic piano, Dan Coulthurst - trumpet, Jasmine Whalley - saxophones, Fergus Quill - double bass, Richard Moulton - drums

Support this time comes from one of the current young lions of jazz at Leeds Conservatoire and for sure a future UK jazz star in the making. Talking about trumpeter Grifton Forbes-Amos. London born and raised, he started playing trumpet aged 10 years old but happily confesses he didn't really start to get heavily into it until he was 18 and when he hit Leeds College Of Music (now Leeds Conservatoire). Once in Leeds, he dived into the city's vibrant DIY jazz/soul/global beats scenes with a passion. He joined global fusion/afro jazz crew TC & The Groove Family, abstract jazz crew Fall Quintet, Latin jazz band Punto Sabor and sat in at DJ Lubi's jazz/hip-hop/soul jam session RE:SOUL. He also has a band in London called KOMA, has played live gigs in the "Black Peril" era ensemble of Soweto Kinch and recently joined Tetes de Pois at the first Jazzland Sessions shows. And he's still only 21!
For this third Blue Note Records Tribute at Jazzland Sessions, he's paying homage to his favourite trumpeter and label legend Freddie Hubbard. His quintet (featuring great musicians from Leeds jazz bands Awen Ensemble, Yaatri, Stillwaters), will perform in full the whole 1961 album entitled "Ready For Freddie", one of Grifton's favourite LPs, plus a couple more Hubbard classics. Expect some firing hard bop, modal jazz and blues.

Grifton Forbes-Amos Quintet are : Grifton Forbes-Amos - trumpet/leader, Saul Duff - tenor saxophone, Vincent Kohm - piano, Joe Wilkes - double bass, Eddie Bowes - drums
