DJ Lubi Presents...

JAZZLAND SESSIONS / Amy Clark & Rosie Miles / The Jazz Singer Showcase the new generation of Leeds jazz vocalists

Longtime Leeds jazz/soul/global beats promoter Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi) has come back strong after the pandemic with over a dozen socially distanced limited capacity/seated shows at Brudenell Social Club and nearly all of them have sold out. He's decided to continue with the format into July so here is the first Jazzland Session show of the month and it's time to feature some jazz vocals. So here is a jazz singer showcase featuring two new young rising stars recently graduated from Leeds Conservatoire - Amy Clark and Rosie Miles.

Amy Clark is a Scottish vocalist and improvisor based in Leeds. She recently graduated from Leeds Conservatoire where she spent time composing as well as collaborating with musicians and co-founding Flood Company and Ah Um Collective. Her contemporary takes on jazz standards are inspired by artists Cécile McLorin Salvant and Theo Bleckmann while her original songs draw influence from Snowpoet, Laura Marling and Liane Carroll, combining thoughtful lyricism and intricate melodies.

Her band is made up of some of the wonderful musicians she has met since being in Leeds and who are now coming through as the next generation of young jazz artists in the city, many who have been featured in the first month of Jazzland Sessions shows at the Brudenell in May and June . These include electric bass rising star Amanda Nossen (Flood Company/Gustavo Andrade Quartet), Nico Widdowson on keys (The Fergus Quill Trio, The Mabgate Organ Trio), drummer Eddie Bowes (The Grifton Forbes-amos Quintet, Awen Ensemble) and Emyr Dance on trumpet (Flood Company, Awen Ensemble). Exploring jazz harmony, groove and textural soundscapes, they finally bring the songs Amy wrote in her bedroom over lockdown to life.

Support comes from another fine young jazz singer who has also graduated recently from Leeds Conservatoire. Rosie Miles is a vocalist and writer whose compositions sit between the worlds of Folk & Jazz. Drawing influence from Joni Mitchell, Lianne La Havas and Nina Simone, she tells stories through intricate melodies and poetic lyrics. Since moving North three years ago, she has worked with many familiar faces in the Leeds scene, touring with B-ahwe and co-founding Flood Company and Ah Um Collective.

As well as lead vocals, Rosie plays electric guitar and keys. Her band brings together musicians that she’s collaborated with extensively throughout her time at Leeds Conservatoire and again features some of the next generation of musicians coming into the Leeds jazz scene. They are Sam Palizian on electric bass (APLTN, Spacey Basement Cult),  Theo Black on guitar (Portraits) and Luca Ferrara on drums (recently at the Brudenell playing at a RE:SOUL Session in singer Laura Kindelan's band). Weaving together jazz harmony, soaring melodies and psychedelic soundscapes, expect an original take on classic songwriting.

This show will be a seated jazz gig even if all COVID restrictions are lifted after 21st June 2021.
