DJ Lubi & RE:Soul presents...

Jazzland Session: A Blue Note Records Tribute

George Hall's Ugestu + Jeff Hewer Quartet

Jazzland Sessions are a series of limited capacity, all seated, COVID-19 compliant jazz concerts at Brudenell Social Club Community Room curated by longtime Leeds jazz music promoter and DJ Lubi Jovanovic aka DJ Lubi. The first concert on Friday 30th October 2020 with Têtes De Pois and Awen Ensemble sold out in 5 days. A second Têtes De Pois and Awen Ensemble show on 29th October sold out in 10 days. After a gap of 5 months and COVID-19 cancellations then rescheduled shows and more cancellations, we can now confirm the series is BACK for the whole of May 2021.

This special Jazzland Sessions features A Tribute To Blue Note Records, the greatest modern jazz label of all time. We have two of Leeds's finest jazz musicians leading bands paying homage to two of the label's greatest musicians, drummer Art Blakey and guitarist Grant Green.

Skwid Ink/Tetes De Pois/Jasmine drummer George Hall leads an all-star band UGETSU playing the music of one of his favourite drum heroes Art Blakey and his band the Jazz Messengers. Blakey was one of the longest serving artists on Blue Note Records, from the early 1950s to the 1970s. His powerhouse hard bop meets Latin rhythms band The Jazz Messengers was like a finishing school for young musicians who went on to be jazz stars in their own right - Horace Silver, Hank Mobley, Lee Morgan, Wayne Shorter, Freddie Hubbard, Bobby Timmons. Tonight, UGETSU (an Art Blakey track title) will play Jazz Messengers Blue Note tracks like "Dat Dere", "Hank's Symphony", "Ping Pong" and "The Chess Players" as well as some Impulse Records tracks including "A La Mode" and "Circus".

UGETSU are : George Hall - drums/leader, Felix Burling - trumpet, Jasper Cole - tenor sax, Max Purcell-Burrows - trombone, Nico Widowson - piano, Fergus Quill - double bass.

Guitarist Jeff Hewer opens the night with his quartet playing the music of legendary jazz guitarist Grant Green, another longtime Blue Note Records artist both as a leader and a sideman. Expect Grant Green classics such as "My Favourite Things", "The Kicker" and "Solid" as well as other great tunes from the master's repertoire.

The quartet are : Jeff Hewer - guitar/leader, Sam Quintana - double bass, Steve Hanley - drums, Anna Chandler - sax.

Before and between sets, Leeds jazz DJ legend Gip Dammone (DIG Family) will be playing some classic Blue Note Records tracks, strictly vinyl of course.

This concert will fully comply with existing government COVID-19 safety regulations. You can check these at the venue's website.
Tickets £32 per table
Table bookings only : up to 4 persons per table - all tickets must be pre-booked.
***if government COVID-19 rules change regarding public places and venues are closed again, this event will be postponed and rescheduled to a later date and all tickets sold will be valid for a new date***
