DJ Lubi presents...

Jazzland Sessions : A Blue Note Tribute Pt 2 - Another Workout + Nico Widdowson Trio

After the first Jazzland Sessions : A Blue Note Records Tribute with UGETSU and Jeff Hewer Quartet sold out in a couple of weeks, we had to program a second one. Due to the third England wide COVID-19 lockdown and restrictions from January/February 2021 running up to 17th May, we have had to postpone this show again and reschedule. The new date is Sunday 20th June and features the original headline band Another Workout playing the Blue Note Records hits. New support band is now confirmed and it's the Nico Widdowson Trio playing the Blue Note recordings of bebop piano pioneer Bud Powell. All existing table bookings are valid for the new date.

No matter how contemporary a jazz style today's young musicians play, they always reference back for inspiration to the greatest modern jazz label of all time, Blue Note Records. This is the case for tonight's headline band Another Workout. Band leader/guitarist Ben Haskins is a member of present-tense jazz crews Tetes de Pois, Jasmine, RE:SOUL house band, Franz Von band, Mystic Brew but he also loves legendary Blue Note Records 60s jazz guitar icons Grant Green and Kenny Burrell. So he got some mates together, named the band after a Hank Mobley album, picked a whole bunch of classic Blue Note 50s and 60s tracks to play and started gigging around Leeds' jazz dives. If you love musicians from the label like Grant Green, Hank Mobley, Joe Henderson. Horace Silver, Herbie Hancock, Kenny Burrell, Wayne Shorter, Art Blakey, Sonny Clark and their music, then you'll love Another Workout.

Another Workout are : Ben Haskins - guitar/leader, Ben Powling - tenor sax, George Macdonald - piano, Sam Jackson - double bass, Peter Udall - drums.

Support this time comes from one of the top young jazz pianists in Leeds - Nico Widdowson - and his allstar trio. Since leaving Leeds College Of Music a couple of years ago, he's become a major player in the vibrant Leeds DIY/independent jazz scene playing in a variety of bands/line-ups and covering many different jazz genres. You'll find him at the keys with The Mabgate Organ Trio, Fergus Quill Trio, MDVLNS, George Hall's UGETSU and Fergus Quill Imaginary Big Band. Tonight, he's got a great acoustic trio which includes Sam Quintana (Wandering Monster/Shapeshifters) on double bass, and Will Blackstone (drums). Nico will be playing acoustic piano. They'll be playing the Blue Note Records repertoire of one of the true pioneers of bebop jazz, Bud Powell, including music from the groundbreaking albums " The Amazing Bud Powell Vol 1 & Vol 2". One for the deep jazz heads.

This concert will fully comply with existing government COVID-19 safety regulations. You can check these at the venue's website.
