Bill Baird

plus guest support

My name is Bill Baird.  I make music, mostly.  I also make music videos, direct a public access tv show, write humorous/absurdist tracts and poetry, run a letterpress machine, teach on occasion, and tramp the outdoors.

If I were a brick building, the following would be the bricks:  coffee, aspirin, whiskey, the intersection of capitalism and artistic endeavor, popular music, public access television, graphic notation, Walter Murch, conduction, MaxMSP, sympathetic strings, humor, sadness, afterimage, long duration music notes, Gesamtkunstwerkthe self-help section of a new-age book store, repetition, leitmotif used as bludgeoning tool, thwarted ambition, inherent vs. projected power in use of symbols, video screens as projections and extensions of ourselves, old broken machines and/or technologies used incorrectly, more coffee, more aspirin, more whiskey, repetition, open tuned acoustic guitars.

My work focuses on sympathetic resonance - the amplification, recontextualizion, and manipulation of existing vibrations, either sonic or visual.   I find great beauty in the import / export of visualation of sonic data and, likewise, the sonification of visual data / scientific information.  Much of my recent video work has focused on this interaction.  I've explored this notion of sympathetic resonance in sound art installation, computer programming, instrument building, and musical composition.

I enjoy liminal spaces in my music and in my life, generally.  For those unfamiliar with the term, 'liminal space' refers to a place of uncertainty.    A liminal space is the place in between.

Is he serious or not?   Why does that chord keep repeating?  Is he meaning to do that?

For me, these moments of uncertainty comprise the most exciting moments of life.  New ideas are born.  Classifications become irrelevant.   Ideally, I can create a process which actually ends up guiding me.   I create a system that sweeps me away, and not even I know what will happen next.  It's thrilling, spontaneous, immediate, and can sometimes end up a colossal failure.   The risk is worth the reward.

Not sure I even need to mention this, but... humor is, for me, essential, even if the work is quite serious.   Laughter is transcendence.

I have composed for all sorts and sizes of ensembles, for many film scores, recorded for many labels, toured the world, starred in films, and self-published books and albums galore.

I have been awarded a Dresher Ensemble artist residency, the 2014 Frog Peak collective experimental music award, and the 2013 "Best Newly Arrived Musician" (East Bay Express).
