DJ Lubi presents... Jazzland Sessions

Awen Ensemble + Plantfood

Due to the third English COVID-19 lockdown in January 2021 and restrictions extending to 17th May, this Jazzland Sessions show with Awen Ensemble and Plantfood at Brudenell Social Club Leeds is now rescheduled to Monday 31st May 2021 in the Community Room. All table bookings made for previous dates are valid for the new show.

Awen Ensemble are a Leeds based contemporary jazz collective formed of current students and alumni of Leeds Conservatoire. Each member has heavy involvement in the vibrant Leeds jazz scene and can be found playing in other bands including Yaatri and Narcle. The word Awen, meaning "poetic inspiration" in the Brittonic Celtic Languages of Welsh/Breton/Cornish, and is a nod to the Celtic heritage of band leaders Emyr Penry Dance and Ruari Graham. The band’s compositions display an eclectic hybrid of tribal colours and modern harmony with melodic focus sitting at the centre of the music’s intent. They played the very first two sold-out Jazzland Sessions shows at Brudenell Social Club back in October 2020 as support to Tetes de Pois. They return now as headliners to close the academic year with a big end of exams/recitals party for music college students. Definitely one of the up-and-coming bands from the Leeds DIY young jazz scene to watch out for in 2021/22.

Awen Ensemble are: Emyr Penry Dance (trumpet/flugelhorn) - Saul Duff (tenor saxophone) - Samantha Binotti (vibraphone) - Ruari Graham (electric guitar) - Joe Wilkes (bass) - Timothy Watson (drums)

As always, support comes from a new band from Leeds Conservatoire, this time second year student band Plantfood who came together first in 2020. They play contemporary afro-fusion jazz, equally heavy on the beats and instrumental improvisation and acknowledge their main musical influences are two current UK jazz explosion bands, Ezra Collective and Nubiyan Twist (a band that also formed in their 2nd year at Leeds Conservatoire in 2011, then Leeds College Of Music). Great to see a Leeds music college tradition continuing today. You will be hearing a lot more from Plantfood in the next 2 years.

Plantfood are : Ruben Maric - keyboards, Woody Hayden - electric bass, Finn Hamilton - drum kit, JJ Petrie - percussion, George Woolley - baritone sax/bass clarinet/flute, Joe van de Meulen - tenor/soprano sax
