Ferg’s Imaginary Big Band is a large left-field Leeds-based ensemble, led by composer, arranger, conductor and bassist Fergus Quill. The band is an organic and fluid ensemble of more than 25 of the most exciting young musicians drawn from the city’s vibrant jazz, experimental and electronic music scenes. Initially inspired by the cosmic jazz legend Sun Ra, the band grew into a dynamic musical force with a reputation for original compositions, experimental arrangements, and energetic live performances that feature mass dancing, mosh pits and crowd surfing. In early 2023, the band released an eponymous debut LP featuring a tracklist of eclectic compositions & arrangements that has scored airplay across the globe. This led to a series of festival appearances including Manchester Jazz, a triumphant set at Love Supreme in July, followed by a scheduled autumn tour of Lancaster Jazz, London Jazz Festival & Cambridge Jazz Festival.
Fergus Quill is a composer, arranger and bassist from Leeds. He is an established performer within the city’s live music scene, building a reputation for original compositions that reflect an eclectic spectrum of influences ranging from Sidney Bechet to Boredoms. He has released three solo albums in the last 3 years, 2 with his Fergus Quill Trio and 1 with his Fergus Quill Quartet. In 2022 gained nationwide recognition by winning the prestigious Music Company/Tina May Award for "Best Young UK Jazz Musician Of The Year", and by being nominated twice in J To Z’s “Ones to Watch 2023” on BBC Radio 3.
Tonight the band play their first show of 2024 and will be stomping through some old favorites alongside new material. They will also have cassettes for sale featuring some previously unreleased material - a very limited number only on sale at this show!
Support comes via The Imaginettes, the cosmic vocal group made up of singers Amy Clark, Rebecca Herrington, Sunday Lendis and Rosie Miles, accompanied on piano and various gadgets by Fergus Quill. They are four of the finest singers in Leeds who work across the music spectrum - jazz, folk, pop, soul - all with their own successful solo projects. They knocked out the audience at the 2023 Leeds Jazz Festival "Welcome to Leeds" open air stage. They will be doing their set and also guesting with FIBB later on.
