Chile 50 featuring Grupo Luma

+ Mestisa

September 11th 2023 will mark fifty years since the military coup against the democratically elected Salvador Allende government in Chile. What followed was the darkest period in Chile’s history where the military dictatorship imprisoned, tortured and killed tens of thousands of Chilean citizens who they deemed to be their opposition. Thousands of others were forced to flee their country to escape the oppression.

Tonight, Grupo Luma will commemorate this 50th anniversary by performing some of the most iconic songs of Allende’s Popular Unity era and Latin America’s Nueva Canción (new song) movement. The Nueva Canción developed in the 1960s and renewed traditional Latin American folk music. Grupo Luma present their own contemporary arrangements of some of the most popular songs by Victor Jara, Violeta Parra and Atahualpa Yupanki, Inti Illimani, Carlos Puebla and others. The group also performs original compositions that explore co-bandleaders' brothers Francisco & Oscar’s experiences of exile.

Grupo Luma are a six piece Latin American folk group led by Chilean brothers Francisco & Oscar Carrasco. The band plays a mixture of original songs and songs from across Latin America, taking the audience on a journey of the continent through its rich musical heritage. The band is completed by the incredibly talented musicians: Erik Bichard, Jonathan Raisin, P. Max Alder and Phil Hargreaves.

The group play an exciting and diverse range of instruments including the Andean Charango and Quena (bamboo flute), the Venezuelan Cuatro, Peruvian Cajon and Argentinian Bombo, a range of Latin American drums & percussion, as well as Trumpet, Saxophone, Flute, Guitar and Bass guitar.

Francisco & Oscar came to the UK with their parents as refugees in 1975 and made Liverpool their home in the early eighties. The brothers have performed in an array of festivals and concerts in the UK, Europe and Africa including Durban Carnival, live on SABC (South African National Radio), El Sueño Existe, La Linea (London Latin Music Festival), Bradford Festival, Royal Liverpool Philharmonic Hall, and many more. They have been featured on Channel 4, BBC1, BBC Radio 4, BBC 6 Music, Music Life (BBC World Service) and many others.

Grupo Luma takes you on a journey through Chilean & South American political song. Having performed a highly successful concert at their debut in the LA LINEA/Latin Music Festival in London earlier this year, Grupo Luma are touring their “Chile 50 Years” show around the UK in September 2023 to commemorate the 50th anniversary of the coup in Chile.

Support comes from Leeds world roots/Latin American folk band Mestisa, whose lead singer Ana Luisa Munoz is also from Chile. Almost a quarter of a century ago, Ana Luisa met singer/musician Barbara Kempf in Leeds at one of the open mic nights at The Grove Inn and they’ve been playing and singing together ever since, forming the core of Mestisa. The striking rhythms of their music together with their beautifully melded vocal harmonies are what makes Mestisa special. They perform traditional and popular music from Latin America: romantic Boleros, Argentinian zambas, Chilean tonadas and lively Bolivian huaynos. They have released one album - "Mestisa : Beautiful Sogs From Latin America" and in recent years, they started writing and performing their own original songs. Mestisa have headlined at Filey Folk Festival, Beverley Folk Festival and Seven Arts in Leeds and also played at Kendal Calling, Bridgewater Hall Manchester, Musicport Festival, Vamos Leeds Festival and Chapel Allerton Arts Festivals as well as taking part in several international concert seasons at Leeds University's Clothworkers Hall.
