A DJ Lubi / Tight Lines Show

Snazzback (worm discs) + NAALÍ Collective

+ The Fergus Quill Trio

DJ Lubi and Tight Lines join together to present the debut Brudenell show for highly respected and popular Bristol contemporary jazz/global beats band Snazzback. After a killer performance last August for Tight Line's "Chill Withers" night, they return to Leeds with more sonic jazz and heavy beats to blow your socks off. Support from new Leeds emerging stars of future soul/alt-jazz, the NAALÍ Collective, led by Norwegian singer Lina Holt (they supported Snazzback's Worm Discs label mates corto.alto to great effect last December at Hifi Club/Sunday Joint). Opening the night is maverick double bass genius and Tight Lines label artist Fergus Quill and his acoustic jazz trio. A superb meeting of the vibrant and underground DIY jazz/global beats/electronic music scenes of Bristol and Leeds.

New wave dancefloor instrumentalists Snazzback bring a renewed, daring energy to dance music. The 7-piece embrace their Bristol beginnings to create a sound fusing abstract beats with spiralling improvisation that at times doesn’t shy away from chaos. Their music is soaked in influences including interlocking West African rhythms, rootsy Brazilian flavours, sprawling soundscapes, deep dubstep basslines and flickering arpeggiators (synths). A collaborative instinct runs through the group, and an eclectic choice of vocalists and MCs keeps their compositions shimmering in unexpected ways. Snazzback’s electrifying chemistry has wowed audiences at the legendary Ronnie Scott’s and Jazz Cafe venues in London as well as major festivals like Glastonbury Festival, Love Supreme, Shambala, Latitude, Boomtown and Green Man. Their music has gained support from radio heavyweights including Gilles Peterson, Jamie Cullum, Tom Ravenscroft and Jamz Supernova.

Press & Radio Quotes:

"Snazzback...Great! There's been so much talk about the London jazz scene but there's A LOT going on in Bristol"- Gilles Peterson (BBC 6Music)

“An explosive sense of energy...buzzing and fizzing with fresh ideas” - Clash Magazine

“SNAZZBACK... love that band - a seven piece collective from Bristol. Really sick track that...3 Kings” - Jamz Supernova (BBC 6 Music)

Support for this show is from the highly rated Leeds future soul/alt-jazz crew NAALÍ Collective led by Norwegian singer, artist and activist Lina Holt. Her raw and soulful voice, storytelling and use of electronics mould together into a space of spirituality, politics, expression and lived experience. Her music is inspired by her favourite artists like Erykah Badu, Bjork, James Blake, Hiatus Kaiyote, Bobby Mcferrin and Greentea Peng. Activism and stands on politics often comes through in her music and together with her band, they’re here to comfort you, create vibrations on the dancefloor, provide food for thought, and create community wherever they go. NAALÍ Collective is a pan-global group with musicians from all over the world - Norway, Brazil, United Kingdom, Lebanon - coming together to make universal sounds for all people. They smashed it live at their autumn Leeds shows across Leeds. Now they make their Brudenell debut. Musical fireworks guaranteed.

Opening the night are Tight Lines label artists the Fergus Quill Trio, led by double bassist Fergus Quill and featuring Nico Widdowson on piano and Theo Goss on drums. They released their debut album "Zoop Zoop" in spring 2021 which featured strong radio support from Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music), Jazz FM and Worldwide FM. They also appeared on the "We Out Here Festival" on-line event dedicated to the Leeds scene in June 2021. They make exciting and original music that encompasses spiritual jazz, bebop, psychedelic sounds and cinematic soundtrack vibes. All three musicians are very highly respected on the jazz/improvised music/rock scenes in Leeds and Fergus also guests occasionally with NYJO on various projects. His Fergus Quill Imaginary Big Band (a 24 piece cosmic jazz inspired by Sun Ra) has appeared a couple of times at Brudenell but this is the first time the trio play at the venue. Get down at 8pm to catch some beautiful and challenging music that pushes the boundaries of this thing we call "Jazz".
