DJ Lubi presents...

Yaatri (album launch)

+ 2/22

DJ Lubi's Jazzland Sessions proudly present another great double bill from the currently buzzing and vibrant Leeds jazz scene. After 3 years since they first formed at Leeds Conservatoire, Yaatri release their debut album. Support comes from current rising stars from the same music institution, jazz x beats fusion crew 2/22.

Yaatri is an award winning five-piece art-rock/jazz crossover group formed in Leeds in 2018. Their blend of complex composition and ethereal soundscapes captivates the heart as well as the mind. Influenced by the momentum of the rhythms of India, immersive timbres of electronic music, and energy of rock and roll, their music has a strong sense of purpose and journey.

Led by Indian/American guitarist and composer Liam Narain DeTar, Yaatri is Felix Bertulis-Webb on keys, Rosie Miles on vocals, Joe Wilkes on bass and Dom Kilsby on drums.

Yaatri have rapidly gained a reputation for being among the most forward-thinking and unique creative forces in the North of England. Combining the multicultural sounds of DeTar’s upbringing with psychedelic soundscapes, intricate arrangements and musicianship beyond their years, their music has been described by fans as emotionally transportive and capable of taking listeners to a higher spiritual place. Driven by lyrical melodies and propulsive grooves, Yaatri is compelled by the desire to push the boundaries of modern songwriting.

Supported by organisations such as Leeds Conservatoire, Manchester Jazz Festival, and Jazz North, their self-released debut EP ‘Reach’ has accumulated over 125k streams, been featured internationally in publications including Rolling Stone Magazine India, championed by the likes of Jazz FM’s China Moses and purchased on vinyl by fans in England, Scotland, Ireland, Wales, Australia, Belgium, Germany, Norway, Japan, the United States and Canada.

Following in the footsteps of artists such as Soweto Kinch and Roller Trio, Yaatri received the esteemed Peter Whittingham Jazz Award in November 2020, enabling them to collaborate with revered producer Sam Hobbs (Kefaya, Keeley Forsyth) on their next body of work. The ensemble’s recent releases have been on Jazz FM’s Playlist, were among Music Is My Sanctuary’s most popular exclusive premieres of 2021, and were broadcast internationally on shows including BBC Radio 1, BBC6, Jamz Supernova’s Selector Radio, Bandcamp Weekly, Soho Radio, Totally Wired, and more.

Their debut LP ‘Lucid’ is set to release on February 18th, 2022.

Press & Radio Quotes:

“If you liked Hiatus Kaiyote, these guys might be up your street” - Sian Eleri, BBC Radio 1

“A song that I consider special” - John Osborne, Jazz FM (track of the week)

“Sonic delight”- Rolling Stone Magazine India

“Enthralling and dramatic” - Jazz Revelations

“Brilliant stuff” - Illicit Grooves (Totally Wired Radio)

“...sublime “ - Emily Pilbeam, BBC Introducing West Yorkshire

2/22 (two-twenty-two) are one of the hottest jazz ensembles to emerge from the rehearsal rooms of Leeds Conservatoire in the last 18 months. Like minded souls coming together from a love of UK/US contemporary jazz fusion and influenced by the likes of Yussef Kamaal/Butcher Brown/Ezra Collective/Alfa Mist, 2/22 blend jazz with a multitude of genres, consistently keeping energy, emotion and infectious rhythm at the forefront. This is definitely "jazz in the present tense". They began in their second year at the music conservatoire but their progress was temporarily stalled as the pandemic shut down the music scene and gigs disappeared. Since live music came back last summer, they've played sold out/packed events at Hyde Park Book Club, Smokestack, The Wardrobe as well as supporting London's explosive jazz/afro/bass giants Steamdown at Headrow House. In November, they headlined Brudenell Social Club for the first time at DJ Lubi's Jazzland Session "Young Jazz Rebels" showcase. On a Monday night in November, they put 200 people into the main room. A phenomenal achievement for a band of final year music college students. That same month, they also released their debut single "Opal" produced by Leeds jazz/soul genius producer Troy Kay, a killer slice of jazz improvisation and broken beat madness. It made it onto the BBC Introducing (West Yorkshire) "Best Of 2021" list.
2/22 are: Taye George - drums, Ruben Maric - keys, Theo Wells-George - electric bass guitar, Conor Thomas - electric guitar, Gustavo Andrade - tenor sax, Emyr Penry Dance - trumpet
