DJ Lubi presents...

Jazzland Sessions // Rosie Frater-Taylor + Rosie Miles

....where jazz meets, soul, folk and pop

***please note, this is a seated show***

DJ Lubi's Jazzland Sessions have been a great hit over the summer of 2021 with the Leeds jazz scene as live music returned, focussing totally on local musicians from the city's vibrant scene. Now it's time to cast the net beyond the city's boundaries and feature musicians from further afield. Tonight, Jazzland Sessions welcomes one of the rising stars of UK jazz, folk and pop to the Brudenell - London singer/guitarist/songwriter Rosie Frater-Taylor.

Just 21 years old, Rosie Frater-Taylor has released, according to Jazzwise Magazine, one of the best albums of 2021. "Bloom" came out in June and it perfectly blurs the lines between jazz, folk, pop and soul. Think Joni Mitchell meets Pat Metheny, Lewis Taylor teams up with Emily King, or a young female version of John Mayer. Tom Robinson (BBC 6 Music) called it "genuinely exceptional".

She first broke though in 2018 with her self-produced debut album "On My Mind" which received both critical and public acclaim, garnering praise from BBC 6 Music, BBC Radio 1, Jazz FM, A Love Supreme Festival and songstress Becca Stevens, one of Rosie's main inspirations.

In October 2020, Rosie began her second album journey with the release of five singles over nine months - "Better Days", "Think About You", "Crazy" (her take on the Seal song), "Just My Type", "Hey" - and they have accumulated over 200,000 streams. She caught the attention and got the support from the likes of Gilles Peterson (BBC 6 Music/Worldwide FM), Jordan RakeiMichael League(Snarky Puppy), Rosie LoweAbby McCarthy (BBC Radio 1) plus Complex Magazine, Bandcamp, Jazz FM, Worldwide FM, Jazz Re:freshed, Soho Radio and global platform Pickup Music also championed the young musician too.

"Complex, jazzy, smooth, delicate" - Abby McCarthy - BBC Radio 1

"A delicious album. I've fallen in love with Rosie, musically speaking" - Gilles Peterson - BBC 6 Music / Worldwide FM

"Bloom" was supported strongly by Gilles Peterson on his BBC 6 Music show and he invited Rosie and the band to play live at his legendary Brownswood Basement Session in June where they performed four tunes from the album. Gilles then went on to play another three tracks from the LP, making it seven album track plays on national radio in the space of a week!

With ‘Bloom’, Rosie blends adventurous songwriting with a whimsical pop sensibility, multi-layered acoustic soundscapes and virtuoso guitar skills (her George Benson style unison guitar solo x scat vocals on "Better Days" is hugely impressive). While preserving her trademark luxurious vocals and unique guitaristic song-structures, Rosie's sound has been elevated through a collage of experiences and connections, be it through navigating the London jazz and folk scene or collaborating with musicians such as Snowpoet’s Chris Hyson on two songs. In May 2021, Rosie released the music video for 'Just My Type' via Snarky Puppy's GroundUp Music YouTube channel, who are big supporters of the young artist, leading to offer her a spot at their world-renowned GroundUp Music Festival in Miami. On the 24th May, she headlined a sold-out London Jazz Cafe show to celebrate the launch of 'Bloom'.

Now Rosie Frater-Taylor and her band hit Leeds for the first time. Get down and catch this future star in the warm and intimate surroundings of the Brudenell Community Room for this very special Jazzland Sessions show.

Support for this show is from another Rosie, our very own Leeds folk-soul-jazz singer/guitarist Rosie Miles. She's the perfect opener for Rosie Frater-Taylor as her songs/compositions also sit between the worlds of folk, pop and jazz. Drawing influence from Joni Mitchell, Lianne La Havas and Nina Simone, she tells stories through intricate melodies and poetic lyrics. Since moving North three years ago, she has worked with many familiar faces in the Leeds scene, touring with B-ahwe and co-founding Flood Company and Ah Um Collective.

As well as lead vocals, Rosie plays electric guitar and keys/piano. Her band brings together musicians that she’s collaborated with extensively throughout her time at Leeds Conservatoire and features some of the next generation of musicians coming into the Leeds jazz scene. They are Sam Palizian on electric bass (APLTN), Theo Black on guitar (Spacey Basement Cult) and Luca Ferrara on drums (Portraits). Weaving together jazz harmony, soaring melodies and psychedelic soundscapes, expect an original take on classic songwriting. Rosie's recent joint Jazzland Sessions show with fellow singer and best friend Amy Clark in July 2021 sold out in advance. Get down early to catch one of Leeds' most exciting emerging new artists from any genre.
