DJ Lubi Presents...

Jazzland Sessions // Rafe's Dilemma + Sam Dolling Trio

For the final Jazzland Sessions show of September 2021, we feature a meeting of the jazz generations with some well known faces from the Leeds jazz scene of the last decade alongside some of the new young players starting to break through as music came back in summer 2021.

Rafe's Dilemma are Nel Begley (vocals), Jamil Sheriff (piano/keys), Katie Patterson (drums) and Pete Turner (bass). The quartet pulls influence from jazz, electronica and rock inspired by Bill Naughton’s legendary play ‘Spring and Port Wine’. Originally formed in 2017 as a commission for Bolton Worktown Festival (2018), the band went on to release their debut album ‘Rafe’s Dilemma’ with an accompanying Arts Council England supported tour (2019). They are currently part of Jazz North’s Northern Line Scheme 2019/20 and are writing new material with the endorsement of award winning playwright Leo Butler. To quote the band...."Find yourself immersed in synthesised soundscapes, electronic improvisation & spoken word, exploring the multitude of emotions we all experience towards our families".

Popular on the UK contemporary jazz scene, past performances include: Manchester Jazz Festival, Future Yard - Birkenhead, Lancaster Jazz Festival, Whiskey Jar - Manchester, The Vortex - London, Jazz At The Lescar - Sheffield, Chapel Allerton Festival, Live from Worktown - Bolton, Cleethorpes Jazz Festival, Phase One - Liverpool, The Cask - Scarborough, Buxton International Festival, Bolton Town Hall, Darwen Jazz, Lincoln Performing Arts Centre, Leeds Jazz Festival

"A mesmerising performance which had the audience spellbound" - Gary Ward (Darwen Music Project)

"A wonderfully satisfying blend of textures, rhythms, moods and emotions" - Jez Matthews (Jazz At The Lescar, Sheffield)

Support comes from young rising stars of the Leeds jazz scene, the Sam Dolling Trio featuring Sam on acoustic piano, Joe Wilkes on double bass and Eddie Boyes on drums. After 15 months of enforced limbo due to the pandemic and no gigs, they returned to live gigging at a July Jazzland Sessions show supporting Emma Johnson's Gravy Boat and they went down a storm. Now bringing in more of Sam's original compositions, they are the next generation of Leeds jazz musicians and very much keeping alive the contemporary jazz trio tradition.

Seated show. Book tables via the Brudenell website or Seetickets account. Tables available for 1, 2, 3 and 4 people.
