DJ Lubi presents...

Jazzland Sessions / Doomtet + Portraits

Jazzland Sessions continues to give emerging jazz artists and bands in Leeds the opportunity to present original music to new audiences. Tonight, we have two new bands. One is full of established and well known musicians you've seen and heard at this session before and at other venues across the city in a host of bands. The other is a new band of 2021 Leeds Conservatoire graduates, the next generation of Leeds jazz stars in the making.

Since graduating from Leeds Conservatoire in 2019, electric bass player Dave Edwards has been playing professionally around Leeds and beyond performing other people's material. In 2020, he decided to put his own band together to play his original compositions and Doomtet was born. Not the best time to launch a band as music was switched off from 23rd March until May 2021, hence the band name. Now the band is back and gigging again. Dave describes the band as a contemporary jazz ensemble with "intimate melodicism, lush harmony, intrepid improvisation and a sprinkling of doom". Musical influences range from Kenny Wheeler and Steely Dan to Janek Gwizdale and Radiohead. It's a bit of an allstar Leeds jazz line-up with musicians from the Mabgate Organ Trio, Shapeshiters, The Fergus Quill Trio, Gravy Boat, New Position and the August Charles band. They've played some early gigs at Sela Bar and Hyde Park Book Club but tonight, they step out onto the legendary Brudenell stage for a Jazzland Sessions new artists showcase.

Doomtet are : Dave Edwards (electric bass guitar), Nico Widdowson (piano/keys), Anna Chandler (sax), Will Blackstone (trumpet), Steve "Chief" Hanley (drums).

Support comes from a new band of Leeds Conservatoire alumni who graduated summer 2021. Again, within the music college circles, they are musicians who play in so many of the current bands breaking through in the Leeds jazz scene. Portraits are a duo based in Leeds, pianist Jacob Hargreaves and drummer Luca Ferrara. Both from a young age have taken inspiration from old school breaks, hip hop, jazz and cinematic soundscapes. Through their years of practice and development they’ve come together and formed a unique take on these genres. They work with multiple different artists to bring a new sound to their original music combining live instrumentation with DAW based production. Band members also play in other bands familiar to Leeds audiences which include TC & The Groove Family, Tetes de Pois, the Laura Kindelan band and 2/22.

Portraits are : Luca Ferrara (drums), Jacob Hargreaves (keys/synth), Conor Thomas (guitar), Amanda Nossen (electric bass), Grifton Forbes-Amos (trumpet)

This is a table seated show.
