DJ Lubi presents...
Jazzland Sessions // Ben Haskins Quartet + Hyo Jung Trio....a jazz guitar special
DJ Lubi's Jazzland Sessions at Brudenell Social club have really made an impression in the Leeds jazz scene. They always feature two live bands. An established band/artist and an emerging new young talent in the local scene. It's the same tonight. We bring back one of Leeds' favourite and busiest jazz guitarists and introduce another guitarist at the start of her jazz music career.
The Ben Haskins Quartet is led by Leeds-based guitarist Ben Haskins (Tetes de Pois, Jasmine, Another Workout, Franz Von, KOG). In April 2021, they followed up their 2019 debut EP "Candescence'', by releasing the double single "Twenty Twenty/Laid Up" on HPBC Records. Recorded in the depths of a global pandemic, the two tracks showcase the maturity, tenacity and interplay of this now seasoned group. The quartet (which features members of Tetes De Pois, Wandering Monster, The Fergus Quill Trio, Jasmine and K.O.G & The Zongo Brigade), came together through jam nights, mutual projects and a love for improvised music. After successful gigs around Leeds' favourite jazz joints since 2019, the group has regularly gigged across the North, leading to their first release "Candescence".
Exploring open, melodic compositions and expansive improvisations, the guitar and tenor sax led quartet draws influence from jazz scenes on both sides of the Atlantic, taking inspiration from John Coltrane, Shabaka Hutchings, Kurt Rosenwinkel, Mark Guiliana, and Bill Frisell.

Like so many compositions from the post-lockdown generation of artists, "Twenty Twenty" has been born out of the dichotomy of hope and frustration felt by people world-wide. In a time where musicians have been deprived of their livelihood and soul food, writing music and honing a craft is all that is left. Both the composition and improvisation reflect a time when resilience is found amidst despair. "Laid Up" draws inspiration from the contemporary canon of jazz. Pushing the dynamic and sonic capabilities of the guitar quartet, the music doffs a hat to the John Coltrane Quartet and the music of Kurt Rosenwinkel, whilst exploring a driving 5/4 groove with propulsive energy. It had a great response with radio plays on Jazz FM, BBC Introducing, Worldwide FM, Totally Wired Radio, Threads Radio, Global Soul Radio, Jorvik Radio, Sheffield 92.3fm, Radio D59b (Belgrade, Serbia) and P8 Jazz Radio (Copenhagen, Denmark). They are recording the debut album for 2022 release. You may have seen and heard them live at the first 2021 Jazzland Sessions show in May supporting the Svarc Hanley Longhawn trio. It's great to have them back now as headliners.
The band are : Ben Haskins - guitar and compositions, Ben Powling - tenor saxophone, Owen Burns - electric bass, Theo Goss - drums.
Support comes from a new rising star on the Leeds jazz scene - Hyo Jung - who recently graduated from Leeds Conservatoire with a first in Jazz Guitar and performance. She is a South Korean guitarist who has various musical loves from across the spectrum that include jazz, rock, funk and fusion, producing unique playing styles and tones. With the huge interest in jazz-rock fusion, her tone is heavily inspired by Mike Stern, one time Miles Davis band member. At the same time, her influences included musically polished musicians such as Gilad Hekselman, Mike Moreno, Kurt Rosenwinkel and Adam Rogers, who have inspired her arrangements/original material. She has performed at many venues in Leeds including LS6 Cafe, Seven Arts, Hifi Club and Hyde Park Book Club, and with various musicians and line ups. Tonight we showcase her trio with Louis Berthoud on drums and Fergus Leach on electric bass. Get down early to see and hear another new young rising star from our vibrant Leeds jazz scene.
