Matt Berry

plus guest support PUGWASH

Matt Berry is an English actor, writer, comedian and musician, best known for his appearances in The IT Crowd, Garth Marenghi's Darkplace, The Mighty Boosh, and Snuff Box.

As a musician, Berry composed all the music for Snuff Box as well the music for AD/BC: A Rock Opera, which he co-wrote with Richard Ayoade. AD/BC was broadcast in December 2004 and featured Fulcher and Mighty Boosh stars Julian Barratt and Noel Fielding. He also performed a song for an episode of Garth Marenghi's Darkplace entitled "One Track Lover", a spoof of cheesy romantic 80s songs. He also composed music for the BBC 2 Steve Coogan comedy Saxondale and appeared in the first and third episodes of the second series of the show. Berry has released three albums: Jackpot in 1995, Opium which was a limited edition self-released record in 2008 and Witchazel in 2009 as a download, later released on CD and vinyl by Acid Jazz Records in 2011.

His touring band is composed of members of Brighton-based experimental rock group 'Jonas 3', whom he has toured with several times between 2006-2007.

Looking back, Matt Berry wouldnt have had it any other way. If his highly successful career as an actor/comedian/radio DJ hadnt sent him on a different trajectory, he wouldnt be where he is today: having just released his first album proper, Witchazel.

Recorded almost entirely in his front room, it touches a central nerve of anyone with a fondness for British psychedelia and/or 70s folk. For Matt, its a labour of love, pure and simple.I guess the main objective is for it not to be seen as a vanity project. Unfortunately, in this country theres this idea that youre not really allowed to do more than one thing.

Im acutely aware people might think Im not serious. But Ive always been in bands, making music is what I love doing.Having been thwarted in his attempts to form a band at school, Matt joined a succession of groups on graduation from college in Nottingham. I knew exactly what I wanted to do. But it never happened. Then I ended up doing Darkplace and life took a different turn. This is the music I love. Theres nothing deliberately weird about it. I love doing all the other stuff, but in the end music is what gets me horny.
