Brudenell presents... An evening with Crass founder

Steve Ignorant's Slice of Life

"I’ve got lots of stories about what happened from my time in Crass. I will be slowly introducing this stuff into the Slice of Life shows. In between songs I will be doing a lot of talking, almost like a spoken word thing, and I will try and incorporate this stuff from those Crass years into it because I know that’s what a lot of people are interested in. People really like to hear it. I can’t get away from it, and that’s not a bad thing.

Someone suggested to me that I should write another book that goes more in depth with Crass, but I don’t really want to do that because everyone would know it and I wouldn’t be able to do it on stage. I can say that there is a lot though that people don’t know about Crass and what happened to us." -Steve Ignorant

On the way home from the Australian & New Zealand Last Supper Tour; Carol,Pete and Steve found themselves stranded due to the Chile ash cloud. During the long night looking at the lights of Sydney while drinking beers, Slice Of Life was born. Slice Of Life is an opportunity for Steve to explore the more contemplative side to his songwriting. A far cry from the aggression of Crass, the project centres around new original songs in an acoustic style. Piano, acoustic guitar and upright bass provides a simple and sometimes jazz influenced accompaniment, with Steve embarking on a range of stories, poems and reflections between songs. This year Slice Of Life have performed with great success in Manchester, Belper, Norfolk, Brighton, Wellingborough and on the acoustic stage at Rebellion festival this August. In November they performed in support of UK Decay at Islington Academy. Slice Of Life will continue to perform in 2014 with visuals added to their show.

Steve Ignorant is well known for co-founding the anarcho-punk band Crass with Penny Rimbaud in 1977. Apart from doing spoken word performances as a solo artist, he also performed with Conflict, Schwartzenegger and Stratford Mercenaries. In 2007 he performed Crass’s entire Feeding of the 5000 album live at the Shepherds Bush Empire and throughout 2010- 2011 presented The Last Supper, touring the songs of Crass around the globe, ending with a farewell gig at Shepherds Bush Empire in November 2011. Carol Hodge joined Steve’s Last Supper band in January 2011 and provided female vocals for the US, Canada, Australian and New Zealand tours, as well as the farewell gig
at Shepherds Bush Empire. She has been fronting rock bands since the age of 15, including current project Wrecks, Bad Taste Barbies and plays piano and sings in her solo project Crystal Grenade. Pete Wilson saved The Last Supper band’s bacon by taking over on bass for the Australian and New Zealand tours, as well as the farewell gig at Shepherds Bush Empire. He has played guitar and bass (though not simultaneously, despite his efforts) in several
bands, including Wrecks, Andy T and Lies, All Lies. Lucas Martin is the latest addition to the Slice Of Life fold. After wowing both the rest of the band and the audience with his guest bass playing at Islington Academy, it was
decided that he needed to become a permanent fixture.
