Dj Lubi presents...

Jazzland Sessions : Shaku (Unplugged) + Tom Attah (solo set)

As covid restrictions are extended into July 2021, DJ Lubi's popular socially distanced/seated/limited capacity shows continue at Brudenell Social Club. Even if restrictions are lifted by the time of this gig, it will remain a seated show. The perfect vibe for a night joining the dots between jazz, blues, soul, funk and rock.

Leeds prog-jazz-rock-psyche-funk champions Shaku were on a roll prior to the pandemic. In 2019 they were gigging all over the UK and that autumn, they recorded their debut album. Their final live show in Leeds before the lockdown hit in March was actually at the Brudenell for a DJ Lubi show launching their long awaited debut album "Maku".  It was 15th February 2020 and it kicked off their UK promotional tour for the album. They managed to do some of the shows and then the music scene was shut down. It's fantastic that their first full live show in 15 months is once again at the Brudenell.

After  forming in 2018 and with two years of relentless gigging across the UK including supporting the likes of Henge, The Headhunters, Too Many Zoos and Têtes De Pois, Shaku finally delivered their much anticipated debut album “Maku” in February 2020. Fusing prog-jazz-rock sounds of the past with prog-jazz-rock sounds of the future, they love the music of Zappa, Gong, Caravan and Parliament/Funkadelic and weave these influences together into their own unique sound they call "Frog Rock". The album was well received with both critics and fans and their live shows have always knocked audiences out.

During lockdown, they've kept busy with some live streams and writing new material. When offered the chance to do a Jazzland Sessions seated show, they jumped at it. They'll be playing a stripped down, unplugged set which will focus more on their jazz and blues side than their prog rock, funk and rap side. These guys are like their hero Frank Zappa and his band the Mothers Of Invention.... prolific jazz players without being restricted by the "jazz musician" straight jacket. It will be a firing set of great musicianship and soloing with the usual Shaku humour.

Support comes from one of the UK's finest blues musicians, Shipley/Yorkshire based blues guitarist and singer Tom Attah. Combining the raw power of Son House with the dense hypnotic rhythms of Howlin’ Wolf and the barrel-chested roar of the old blues shouters, Tom’s live shows take audiences on a journey from the Delta to the Download. As a guitarist and singer, Tom performs solo, with an acoustic duo and as part of an electric blues band.  Tom's solo acoustic work includes his own original blues compositions and has led to performances at major music festivals around Europe, including major stages at the Glastonbury Festival of Contemporary Performing Arts, the Great British Rhythm & Blues Festival, and Blues Autour Du Zinc as well as specialist blues events and festivals in the USA and Russia.

Tom's original music commissions include composing and performing the music for the Handel/Hendrix permanent exhibition in Mayfair, London, and Tom's multiple national radio appearances include performances and documentaries for BBC Radio 2, BBC Radio 4, and Sky Arts. Tom's journalistic writing is regularly featured in specialist music publications including Blues In Britain magazine, and his original research papers and book reviews  are published in several international peer-reviewed  journals.  Tom's chapter on the blues in Britain during the 1950s and 1960s was published by Equinox Press in April 2018, and his most recent publication is a co-edited book by David Sanjek, published in September 2018 by Routledge. Tonight he's performing solo, just that fantastic blues voice and his great blues guitar skills.
