RE:SOUL Sessions

Mamilah & Wise Willis

After 14 months off due to the pandemic shutting down the music scene, long time Leeds jazz/soul/global beats promoter Lubi Jovanovic (DJ Lubi) made a successful return to hosting live gigs in May/June at Brudenell Social Club with his 4 week program of socially distanced/limited capacity/seated shows, many which sold out. Now it's time to add more shows from July onwards. First up, the third RE:SOUL Sessions show featuring past, present and future soul.

Mamilah is a well known and established Leeds-born band, combining elements of neo-soul and old-school soul with the flavours of the recent UK jazz resurgence.  Having shared the stage with luminaries such as KOKOROKO, Kool & The Gang, Yazmin Lacey, Galaxians and Craig Charles as well as getting their hands dirty on the local circuit, Mamilah’s live performance continues to thrive nationally. Summer 2019 saw performances at Boomtown, El Dorado and Virgo Festival, as well as at pioneering grassroots venues such as The Wardrobe, The Hootannany and Band on The Wall.

Their debut EP ‘Moonlight Walking’, independently released in August 2018, quickly followed their first single ‘Sundrips’ and was a catalyst for much of this activity; earning regular airtime on Alan Raw’s BBC Introducing Show in West Yorkshire, being highlighted on his ‘Ones to Watch in 2019’ broadcast, and featured on Bandcamp’s “Best Soul of August 2018” article. Their second EP ‘Talk Less’ was released in May 2020 and received regular airplay from BBC Introducing in West Yorkshire, Jazz FM as well as Global Soul and Sounds Like This Radio. EP remixes followed in September 2020, alluding to a more experimental, electronic direction for the band. They have been tipped as ‘ones to watch’ by Love Supreme Festival and were highlighted as one of the pioneering artists in Leeds underground jazz scene by Clash Magazine.

It's been over a year since their last live performance so they are busting to play again and feature some old favourites alongside new material they are preparing for their debut album.

Support comes from another contemporary soul band on the vibrant Leeds jazz/soul/beats scene, the 8 piece neo-soul/soul jazz group led by drummer With drummer Tim Watson's solid funk/hip-hop beats driving the band and the brass adding the jazz spice up front, they always featured the finest soul singers from the music college as vocalists who included Lizzie Berchie and L'nee Golay, both proper neo-soul queens with incredible voices.. Formed at Leeds College Of Music a few years ago, they quickly established themselves on the local scene with gigs at RE:SOUL shows, The Wardrobe, Hifi Club and LS6 Cafe. With drummer Tim Watson's solid funk/hip-hop beats driving the band and tenor sax titan Saul Duff adding the jazz spice up front, they always featured the finest soul singers from the music college as vocalists who included Lizzie Berchie and L'nee Golay, both proper neo-soul queens with incredible voices.

As lockdown hit in March 2020, it may have stopped them gigging but it also gave time for bandleader Tim Watson to finally finish the album they had been recording since 2019. "Tell Me How You Feel" will be self-released on 11th June across all streaming platforms and will feature the band plus singers plus a special guest appearance from London MC/spoken word poet Kems The Thinker. They will be showcasing the whole album live at this show.

DJ Lubi on the decks as always playing the latest neo-soul/future soul/vintage deep soul. As always, joining the musical dots between soul past, present and future.
