Soul Rebels presents...

Onipa

Kontiki

This is a rescheduled show from 30.04.21. All tickets from previous date remain valid

Another great "DJ Lubi Presents Club Afrosound" show comes into Brudenell Social Club's Community Room on Friday 28th January 2022.

Afro-Futurist music machine Onipa are the brainchild of producer, composer and multi-instrumentalist Tom Excell (the music genius behind acclaimed Afro-jazz project Nubiyan Twist), and charismatic Ghanaian vocalist Kweku Sackey ( K.O.G & the Zongo Brigade). They are joined in the 4 piece live show by bass synth king Dwayne Kilvington (Steamdown/Wonky Logic) and drummer Finn Booth (Nubiyan Twist).

Since their explosive entry in 2018, Onipa have played dozens of shows in 10 different countries, including Into the Great Wide Open (NL), Glastonbury Festival (UK), Eurosonic (NL), Nuits Sonores (BE), Tribu Festival (FR), The Great Escape (UK), Fusion Festival (DE)  and Africa Express (UK), winning support from The Guardian, Clash Magazine, Radio Nova and many more media outlets.

It's a unique fusion of African music and electronics, drawing on a wide range of influences - Ghanaian Hi Life, Congolese Soukous, Mali Blues, South African Shangaan Electro & Township Music, Nigerian afro-disco, Moroccan Gnawa - combined with ragga, dancehall, UK dance music, jazz and hip hop and inspired by artists like Oumou Sangare, Konono No.1, Kokoko, Flying Lotus, Ebo Taylor, William Onyeabor, Kiki Gyan.

After an EP and 2 singles on Wormfood/Mawimbi, Onipa released their first full studio album "We No Be Machine" on Strut Records of London in spring 2020 to great critical acclaim. In autumn 2021, they dropped the "Tapes Of Utopia" mixtape which harks back to a time of African cassette tapes sold on street markets, a reimagination of mixtape culture, blending genres from analogue tones of Afrobeat, Highlife and Soukous to Afrofuturistic rap and electronics. Check out the great video of the album's single "Chicken No Dey Fly".

Support on the night comes from Leeds/Bradford highlife jazz combo Kontiki who have steadily built up a good local following with their Highlife/Soukous meets Afrobeat/Afro-Jazz fusion where sweet sounding West African style guitars blend with a driving rhythm section topped off with firing sax solos.

***this show has been rescheduled from 19th March to 2022 to 28th January 2022 - all previously booked tickets are valid for the new date***
