Hee Haw Sessions Presents...

Laura Cantrell

A firm favourite of John Peel's, in concert, Laura Cantrell is impeccable: you could wait a long time for her to fluff a note. And she observes the same rigorous quality control in her writing: her lyrics are telling and precise, with not a false rhyme to be heard. She has already wowed a reverent crowd on her recent short British tour and we are thrilled to bring her to Leeds for what we believe is the first time.

For 15 years Laura Cantrell has alternated her career as a country singer-songwriter with other pursuits – working as a high-flying Wall Street executive, doing shifts as a New York radio DJ, and, raising her young daughter. To us, she still could be the next Nanci Griffith. She has a better, sweeter voice and writes songs of a similar, yet less sentimental calibre.

“Not The Tremblin’ Kind”, the title track of Cantrell’s first album launched her in Britain – boosted by the fervent admiration of John Peel. These days the song sounds almost like a mission statement: an assertion by a strong, confident, articulate woman determined to plough her own furrow – all the while reminding the country music business where it came from.

"In her recording career, Cantrell has released four acclaimed albums: “Not The Tremblin’ Kind,” “When The Roses Bloom Again,” “Humming By The Flowered Vine,” and “No Way There From Here.” She has toured extensively in the UK, Europe and Ireland. Did we mention she was a favourite of John Peel? He called her 2000 album “Not The Tremblin’ Kind” “my favorite record of the last ten years, possibly my life.” Cantrell recorded several Peel sessions for the BBC from 2000-2004 and appeared on the first Peel Day program on Radio One commemorating the first anniversary of Peel’s death. Her new album, No Way There From Here, is as good as anything she has done.

“her gentle, unassuming country voice, backed by various twangy strings, leaves no one's heart untouched.” 4 stars The Guardian
“the best country and folk music can conjure when it dreams of the past.” The New York Times
Laura Cantrell has a rare talent.” The Observer
