DJ Lubi presents...

Jazzland Sessions : Young Jazz Rebels 2 / Portraits / Flood Company / Breck Stewart Quartet - cancelled

The "Mr Jazz'' of Leeds since 1982 Lubi Jovanovic (celebrating four decades in the music business this year), returns to Brudenell to feature another showcase of the fine young jazz talent emerging on the scene in Leeds. After the success of the first "Young Jazz Rebels" showcase in autumn 2021, here's the next one. Three bands featuring some of the top musicians from the young jazz scene of Leeds all doing their own unique things - Portraits play contemporary UK jazz fusion, Flood Company are left-field freedom jazz featuring vocals, Breck Stewart Quartet maintain the post-bop jazz tradition. A great snapshot of the diversity of sounds and styles in today's Leeds jazz scene.

Portraits are led by a duo of young musicians based in Leeds, pianist Jacob Hargreaves and drummer Luca Ferrara, 2021 graduates of Leeds Conservatoire. Both from a young age have taken inspiration from old school breaks, hip hop, jazz and cinematic soundscapes. Through their years of practice and development they’ve come together and formed a unique take on these genres. They work with multiple different artists to bring a new sound to their original music combining live instrumentation with DAW based production. Band members also play in other bands familiar to Leeds audiences which include the Naali Collective, The Sunkissed Child, Heritage, 2/22, The Goddess Collective, Yusuf Yellow Band, Elusive Dip and the Gustavo Andrade Quintet. They made their Brudenell debut in autumn 2021 supporting Doomet and now they're back headlining to present audiences their heavy take on contemporary electric jazz.

Portraits are : Luca Ferrara (drums), Jacob Hargreaves (keys/synth), Conor Thomas (guitar), Amanda Nossen (electric bass), Gustavo Andrade (tenor sax)

Flood Company is a contemporary jazz improvisation octet based in Leeds. With members hailing from all ends of England as well as Scotland, Wales and Norway, the band have found inspiration and passion within the cutting-edge music scene of Leeds. They started the project in the depths of lockdown during their final year at Leeds Conservatoire, where they spent time exploring their unusual instrumentation and compelling sound under the wing of award winning saxophonist and composer Ed Jones. Bringing their individual skills and experiences together to form a unified sonic entity larger than themselves, the ensemble’s philosophy is of an equal
collaboration between all members and an honest dedication towards emotional improvisation. Now fully-formed, the ensemble have performed their debut gig at Tightlines’ long established event Chill Withers and are ready to take their work to the studio and share it with more audiences. Open to all textures and emotions, Flood Company wants the listener to feel serenity as well as weight, safety as well as risk amongst the stream of their music.

Flood Company are : Adam Wilkin (trombone), Amanda Nossen (bass), Amy Clark (vocals), Emyr Dance (trumpet), Glen Leach (piano), Jonathan Lodder (drums), Rosie Miles (vocals), Theo Black (guitar).

Breck Stewart Quartet are a new contemporary jazz ensemble made up of Leeds Conservatoire musicians who take inspiration from the classic modern jazz forms of the late 1950s and early/mid 1960s - namely hard bop, modal jazz and post bop. Led by drummer Breck Stewart, the rest of the band are Joe van de Mullen - sax (Plantfood), Woody Hayden - electric & acoustic bass (Plantfood), Myron Evans - keys. They play mainly covers of jazz standards from the late 1950s to mid 1960s with some original compositions mixed in. A great new band of heavyweight musicians/soloists at the start of their collective musical journey/career.
