DJ Lubi presents...

The Haggis Horns

+ Ryan Taylor

It's been a while but the UK's top funk/jazz-funk band are back! The Haggis Horns should have launched their 5th LP "Stand Up For Love" at Brudenell Social Club in May 2020 as part of an extensive UK promotional tour. Obviously that had to be cancelled and rescheduled not once or twice but three times. Four years since their last Leeds show and six years since their last Brudenell show, funk is finally coming home courtesy of DJ Lubi. A belated album showcase, the Horns will be playing new and old songs for dancing (yes, we'll be able to do that again) featuring some of the heaviest funk soul and jazz funk on the planet.
Since they first hit the music scene in 1999, The Haggis Horns have established themselves as one of the top funk/jazz-funk bands in the country. Their now legendary horn section has worked with Mark Ronson, Amy Winehouse, Lily Allen, Martha Reeves, Lou Donaldson, Jamiroquai, Corinne Bailey Rae to name a few. In 2007, they released their debut LP "Hot Damn!" with UK hip-hop/soul/jazz/beats label First Word Records followed up in 2010 with their second album for the label “Keep On Moving”. In 2015, they released their third album “What Comes To Mind” on their own new label Haggis Records and in summer 2017, they dropped their first single on the label “Take It Back” featuring guest rapper Doc Brown. The fourth Haggis Horns album "One Of These Days" was released on Haggis Records in autumn 2017.
In the last few years, they've been busy gigging across the UK and Europe plus working on side projects. Band members George Cooper (keys) and Malcolm Strachan (trumpet) released solo jazz projects on the band's label Haggis Records in 2020. They are currently recording follow up albums and singles However, when a Haggis Horns new LP is being produced, all band members rush back to jump on the project. A pure labour of love so everyone wants to be part of it. That 5th album dropped in the middle of the pandemic so it's only now they can play those news songs to a live audience.
The band only plays once a year if lucky these days in their home city so if you love funk, do not miss it.
Support comes from Sheffield singer/songwriter/producer/keyboard player Ryan Taylor. He loves the sweet sounds of 70s funk and soul as well as the 90s take on those classic vibes by the neo-soul generation. He leads various bands - trios, quartets, larger ensembles - from behind his vintage Fender Rhodes piano and Hammond organ. Like his heroes Donny Hathaway, Stevie Wonder and D'Angelo, he's equally at home on the keys as he is pouring out his soul on lead vocals. For this show, he's bringing his quartet to Leeds which includes former Leeds drummer Ali Mac (Thabo) on kit.
Keeping it nice and soulful before and between live sets is Leeds don of funk, soul and jazz-funk, DJ Lubi Jovanovic. Over 3.5 decades in the game, part of the legendary DIG Family crew in the 80s and 90s and today, resident weekly DJ in Leeds at Sunday Joint (Hifi Club). He'll be playing a strictly vinyl set from his sizable record collection. Always delivers the goods when warming up Brudenell shows
