Captain Wilberforce

+ Shatner

Album launch gig!  To celebrate the launch of Captain Wilberforce's new album "Black Sky Thinking" entry to this gig comes with a free download of the album.

No one is going to accuse Captain Wilberforce of being prolific (their last album was released in 2011) but 2017’s Black Sky Thinking is chock full of crafted alt-pop; timeless, cultured tunes that ear-worm their way into your life. With a new permanent line up - Simon Bristoll (Songwriting, vocals and guitars), Carl Banks (Drums), Rob Simpson (Guitars) and Massimiliano Borghesi (Bass, vocals), the band has forged a reputation for compelling melodies, cascading harmonies and crafted lyrics; these tunes ooze class, self-belief and a relaxed confidence that comes with years of song-writing experience.

On this album Simon was influenced by classic songwriters like Joe Jackson, Ray Davies and Squeeze - as well as their more contemporary counterparts such as Jim O'Rourke, Ryan Adams and Guy Garvey.  His songs caught the attention of the prestigious panel judging the 2015 UK Songwriting Festival Competition, his prize for winning the competition was a residential week working with some hugely respected and successful songwriters.

Black Sky Thinking is being released on CD by US indie label KoolKat Music and will only be available in the UK in that format via import. The album will also be available to download via https://captainwilberforce.bandcamp.com/ and at most digital stores.

Friends of the band include Gideon Coe, Huey Morgan and Tom Robinson of BBC 6 music and Dermot O’Leary who invited the self-managed, self-produced and self-promoted band to record a prestigious Saturday Session in 2012. Uncut Magazine and The Independent newspaper also praised the last album, Ghost Written Confessions:

“Instantly memorable tunes… 4 stars” – Terry Staunton, Uncut Magazine

“The acidic tone of his critiques sit well within the deceptively cheery pop arrangements, and the focus on fractured relationships mines a productive vein of emotional turmoil.” – Andy Gill, The Independent
