Good Folk presents....

DIANE CLUCK + BLUE ROSES

(with Anders Griffen) + Wig Smith

A legendary folkstress and anti-folk pioneer, and together with Blue Roses, one of Yorkshire's finest exports of recent years, together for one night only. One that promises to be very special indeed....

DIANE CLUCK

Diane Cluck is a New York-based singer-songwriter loosely affiliated with the Antifolk scene centered around the open mic nights at the Sidewalk Cafe.

She has recorded six albums since 2000. Performing primarily with her voice and an acoustic guitar, Cluck has also been known to make sounds with piano, organ, harmonium, handmade-xylophone, and zither. She has been influenced by dogs and her home state of Pennsylvania. “Dogs inspire me and break my heart. They are joyful by nature and honest at all times. People imprison and domesticate dogs, rob them of their sex organs and then keep them around to stroke on. Humans keep pets as models of their own restraint. I am interested in ‘freeing the dog’.” Her music uses discordant effects and dynamic contrast.

Devendra Banhart, who has included Diane Cluck’s music on at least one compilation, is an enthusiastic listener: “My favorite singer/songwriter in all of New York City. I’m so happy to be alive at the same time she is because I get to see her perform. It’s her and guitar, or her and piano, or her and harmonium. Her lyrics are so good; when I play this for people they stop doing everything and are quiet for hours after.”

Among others she has collaborated with Jeffrey Lewis and Herman Düne and recently has been working with drummer, Anders Griffen.

BLUE ROSES

Blue Roses is the musical project of Laura Groves, previously known just as Laura Groves.

She lives in the town of Shipley, United Kingdom. Here she writes songs for various instruments, some of which she can play and some of which she can’t (but tries to anyway), and watches the interesting folk go by. Laura’s live gigs are played with guitar and piano, and have included appearances with Final Fantasy, Jeremy Warmsley, Jeffrey Lewis and Tilly and the Wall. Projects include a contribution to the “50minutes” charity compilation alongside artists such as Daniel Johnston, Ladyfuzz and Emmy the Great.

Groves changed her name in November 2008, writing in her MySpace blog “As I’ve been recording and working on new things throughout the year I feel like I’m in a different place musically to when I started out, so it seemed appropriate to become something new”.

She released her debut self-titled album in April 2009 on XL.
