Brudenell, Hey! Leeds, and Please Please You! present...

Superchunk + Girls Against Boys

To celebrate the Brudenell's 100th Birthday and the imminent release of their tenth studio album, 'I Hate Music', Chapel Hill's finest visit Leeds for the first time in forever. Mac McCaughan's indie-punk four piece return to the UK to play the ATP End On An Era Weekender in November and a gig in London. We're delighted to tempt them north to play The Brudenell Social Club on December 2nd, the bands only other UK show.

To make the night all the more special, we have added their old touring buddies Girls Against Boys in support. The NYC via Washington, DC post-hardcore outfit are back with a new EP, 'The Ghost List', their first new material in eleven years. These are the band's first UK live shows since a memorable ATP performance in 2008. GvsB are due to team up with The Jesus Lizard's David Yow for some gigs in the States this autumn before joining Superchunk at Camber Sands in November.

Between them, these two bands have been making a noise for more than fifty years, inspiring thousands of punk and rock bands along the way. To be able to host a fairly intimate party in our favourite venue is a genuine pleasure.

SUPERCHUNK BIO:

Superchunk will release I Hate Music, their tenth studio album, on August 20.

After taking nearly a decade off following the release of Here's to Shutting Up, Mac, Laura, Jon, and Jim decided to shout it out again in 2010 with Majesty Shredding, an album perfectly described by its own title. It's a celebratory set of whoa-whoa-whoas from a group so thrilled by making music together again that they can't contain themselves.

The band's forthcoming release, I Hate Music, is Majesty's dark twin. It's similarly aggressive-often moreso (see "Staying Home")-and every bit as energetic. It reflects the joys of a life spent immersed in music ("Me & You & Jackie Mittoo," "Trees of Barcelona"), but there's a dark undercurrent as well. That title isn't tongue-in-cheek, but it's really more a question than a statement: When you're 20, lazy co-workers and romantic missteps number among your biggest worries; two decades later, life's bigger questions knock louder and louder, demanding answers.

I Hate Music is an album about love more than anything else: love of life, love of living, love of people, and yeah, love of music. It defies its own title so completely and diligently that it never even seems like a fair fight: There's no pain this deep or yearning this severe without the type of love earned over a lifetime. "I hate music ? what is it worth? / Can't bring anyone back to this earth" goes the first line in "Me & You & Jackie Mittoo." That song and its ten companions can't relive the past or resurrect those lost, but they can keep them close enough to see and hear and celebrate. It's dark in here, but if we conjure the right words and sounds, maybe we'll find our way out.

Laura balance:

Tickets for the upcoming Superchunk tour are now on sale and there is something you might want to know. I have been having some problems with my ears, the sort of problems commonly known as "hearing loss," "ringing," and less commonly as "hyperacusis." I have found that playing rock shows for the last couple of years has worsened my condition and I have made the difficult decision not to go out on the road with Superchunk for the upcoming campaign for I Hate Music. And it's not because I hate music. And it's not because I am too old. You know, that thing about if it's too loud you are too old? That keeps running through my head, dammit.I am really sad that I won't be out on the road with Jim, Jon, and Mac because it's a blast. And playing for all of you people who come to our shows is a blast too. It is one of the most fun and gratifying things I have done during my life. I am going to miss you. That said, there is a possibility that I will drop in and play in situations where I think I can effectively protect myself from the loudness. This is not meant to add a roulette element to the upcoming shows. Chances are I won't be there people, ok? If I will, I will let you know in advance. You may be wondering how on earth they will play these shows without me. Well, let me tell you, we have come up with an excellent solution to this problem, and his name is Jason Narducy! You will be in good hands. For clarity, let me add, I have not quit the band. I am really excited to have recorded this new album with Superchunk, and I look forward to making more.Much love,Laura

For , of all bands, calling a record I Hate Music is too on-the-nose ironic to be particularly provocative: Its members have been immersed in music, and clearly in love with it, for virtually their entire lives. Singer Mac McCaughan, in particular, has made a huge string of vital albums with Superchunk and Portastatic ten with the former, six with the latter, plus countless odds and ends with each and runs Merge Records when he's not jumping around and hollering like a kid one-third his age.I Hate Music follows 2010's more appropriately titled Majesty Shredding, which itself followed an agonizing nine-year hiatus and, like its predecessor, it finds the band bleating and blaring with giddy vitality. McCaughan may sing, "I hate music, what is it worth? / Can't bring anyone back to this earth" (in the terrific "Me & You & Jackie Mittoo"), but he clearly understands the countless gifts it's given him during his own time here.Infused with winning, strident energy, I Hate Music still fits in darker ruminations on age and aging Superchunk's sound remains versatile enough to accommodate both a 75-second whiff of brash punk ("Staying Home") and a six-minute album-closer ("What Can We Do") in which McCaughan reflects on nearly 30 years of adulthood with shrugging wisdom. Most importantly, I Hate Music is the sound of a veteran band with its vitality intact, for which fun and fury are essential components of a life thoughtfully lived.
